How to Extend the Life of Your Borers: Maintenance and Infection Control Tips

Burs are indispensable tools in every dental practice and laboratory, directly influencing the precision, efficiency and safety of procedures. Drendel & Zweiling’s high-quality rotary instruments, including carbide burs, diamond burs and endodontic instruments, are designed for durability and high performance. Improper maintenance and sterilization can significantly shorten their life. Following good practices will help optimize the durability of burs, maintain their cutting efficiency and maintain high hygiene standards.

Drendel & Zweiling offers a wide range of burs, each with specific characteristics that determine how they should be maintained. Carbide burs are known for their exceptional cutting ability and wear resistance. With proper maintenance, they can be used repeatedly, but excessive force or improper cleaning can lead to dulling and breakage. Diamond burs are suitable for processing hard materials such as enamel and zirconia. The diamond particle coating wears down over time, reducing cutting efficiency. Endodontic instruments used in root canal treatment require delicate cleaning and sterilization to maintain their integrity. Proper maintenance ensures that Drendel & Zweiling burs will remain sharp, effective and safe to use.

After each use, burs accumulate biological material and dirt, which can reduce their effectiveness and pose a risk of infection. It is important to immediately place them in an enzymatic cleaning solution or warm water after use to prevent any residue from drying out. They should not be left in the cleaning solution for too long, as this can lead to corrosion. The best way to clean them involves mechanically removing dirt with a stiff-bristled brush, followed by treatment in an ultrasonic cleaner. With diamond burs, care should be taken not to rub too hard, as this can damage the diamond coating. After cleaning, the burs should be rinsed with distilled water and dried immediately to prevent rust formation.

Drendel & Zweiling burs are designed to withstand sterilization cycles, but improper handling can lead to premature wear. Autoclaving is the most effective method for destroying pathogens and is recommended for most burs. They should be placed in special boxes or sterilization cassettes to avoid mechanical damage during the process. Dry heat sterilization is a good option for carbide burs as it prevents corrosion, but care should be taken with excessive heating, which can weaken the material. Chemical sterilization with solutions is also a possible method, but some chemicals can lead to degradation of the burs, so it is important to rinse and dry them thoroughly after processing.

Storage of burs also plays a key role in their durability. They should be kept in special cassettes or sterilization containers to prevent mechanical damage and contamination. New and used burs should be stored separately to avoid cross-contamination. Regular inspection for wear, rust or fractures is necessary, as dull burs not only reduce working efficiency, but also generate excessive heat that can damage dental tissues.

Even with proper maintenance, burs will eventually need to be replaced. If you notice a loss of sharpness, need to apply more pressure when working, visible wear on the diamond coating, or broken cutting edges, these are signs that the instrument is no longer effective. Carbide burs with bent or broken burs should be discarded immediately, as they can cause patient injury and reduce the quality of the work. Similarly, the appearance of rust or discoloration indicates improper sterilization and such burs should not be reused.

Investing in high-quality rotary instruments like those from Drendel & Zweiling is just the first step towards achieving precise and effective dental procedures. Following the correct cleaning, sterilization and storage techniques will ensure the longevity of the instruments, maintain their cutting properties and maintain the highest standards of infection control. This not only extends the life of the burs, but also ensures safety for both dentists and patients.
